Water Gel is a super absorbent polymer also called a Hydrogel. You can have serious fun at a party with this stuff! It will absorb up to 1000 times its starting weight when water is added. Hydrogel is the ingredient used in baby diapers. So lets do the Water Gel - Hydrogel Experiment.

Materials: - Water Gel or Hydrogel powder (Ebay or Science Store) - 2 Plastic Cups (not clear) - Water
Procedure Water Gel - Hydrogel Experiment 1) Take one scoop of the Water Gel (about a tablespoon). 2) Put the powder into one of the plastic cups secretly when nobody can see you. 3) Measure 2 ounces of water into another different cup. 4) Get a few friends to watch you (after steps 1-3). 6) Ask for a brave volunteer to stand next to you. 5) Tell everyone your thirsty and going to have a drink. Pour the 2 ounces of water into the cup with the Hydrogel they will think your going to drink it. 6) Then say on second thought it would be much funnier to pour this water onto the brave volunteers head. Since they just watched you pour the water in they will believe its going soak your buddy. 7) Raise the cup over the head of your buddy and turn it over. 8) Wham! No water comes out and your brave volunteer stays dry. 9) Watch everyone's faces drop in astonishment as you become the life of the party!
The Science Behind Water Gel - Hydrogel Experiment
Water Gels are super absorbent polymers. Polymers are long chains of molecules that are linked together. Things made of plastic are polymers. Water Gels can absorb up to 1000 times their weight in water. Common uses for water gels or Hydrogels is in baby diapers. Other uses include farming where it is mixed into the soil to allow for better water retention. Now get some friends and try the Water Gel - Hydrogel Experiment.
